This is me.
Hi, I'm Jo McCarthy, a Personal Trainer, Strength Coach and Massage Therapist based in Malton, North Yorkshire. I specialise in strength training for women, helping clients build confidence, improve fitness, increase muscle strength and support long-term health through personalised coaching.
My approach is shaped by my own experience and by what I know many women need to feel supported, capable and confident in their training. If you don't want to train in a busy gym or feel lost in a crowded space, one-to-one coaching gives you the chance to work with someone who is there just for you. I focus on strength training, functional fitness and sustainable habits to help women feel stronger and more confident at every stage of life. Whether you're navigating perimenopause, looking to improve your fitness, return to exercise after a break, or maintain strength and independence as you age, I provide supportive, personalised coaching tailored to your goals and individual needs.
Why Do I Coach?
I believe exercise should be about so much more than chasing a number on the scales. Strength training has the power to transform not only how we look, but how we move, feel and live, and I know that every woman’s journey is different. My approach is rooted in empathy, compassion and encouragement, creating a supportive space where you feel understood, respected and never judged.
I moved back to Old Malton after 10 years away because family is incredibly important to me, and I wanted to build my life and business back in the community I call home. I live with my husband Paul, who is a Thai Boxing Coach, and together we also run Thai Boxing classes. I coach because I’m passionate about helping women in Malton discover what their bodies are capable of, in a way that feels positive, realistic and empowering. I want women to train with someone who has been through hormonal changes, who understands the challenges of navigating that path, and who can offer genuine support from experience as well as professional knowledge. My philosophy is simple: strong, not skinny. I want my clients to build strength, confidence and resilience that carries into everyday life, whether that’s having the energy to enjoy family time, lifting heavy shopping with ease, navigating the challenges of perimenopause, or maintaining independence and functionality in later years. I’m here to encourage you every step of the way and help you recognise progress you may not have seen in yourself.
Every woman is different, which is why I take a personalised approach to coaching. My goal is to help you create lasting habits, achieve sustainable results and build the strength to enjoy life on your own terms, now and for years to come. With patience, support and a plan tailored to you, you can feel stronger, more capable and more confident in yourself and your body. Whether you’re in your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s or beyond, I want you to know you have someone in your corner.
